Forbes: “What 6 Paso Robles Wineries Are Learning From The Soil”

Sheep grazing in the vineyard at Halter Ranch

Halter Ranch appeared in a new Forbes article this week that takes an up-close look at how Paso Robles wineries are embracing regenerative organic farming.

Home to six Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC™) wineries, Paso Robles is now the wine region with the highest concentration of ROC™ wineries worldwide. We’re proud to be one of them, alongside our neighbors Booker Vineyard, Le Cuvier, MAHA Estate, Robert Hall, and Tablas Creek.

This certification challenges farmers to adopt sustainable practices like sheep grazing, cover cropping, and even releasing beneficial insects into vineyards via drones. It’s a continually evolving process, and wineries in Paso are embracing it with curiosity and a sense of community.

You can see these practices when you visit Halter Ranch just by spotting our sheep! You may also notice our vineyard rows look a bit more overgrown than others you may have visited. It’s all part of the process.

“When guests come and see grass in the rows, they think we have a dirty vineyard,” Winemaker Kevin Sass shared with Forbes. “They are used to conventionally farmed clean vineyards. That’s not what we do here.”
