Forget Napa: Here's Every Winery You Need to Visit in Paso Robles

September 5, 2018
Paso Robles is like the middle child of California wine country; despite its many great producers and tasting rooms, when most people think of a destination for a wine-filled weekend, they tend to think Napa or Sonoma. Take a closer look, though, and you’ll see Paso’s no slouch: Best known for producing Zinfandel, Paso Robles’ 11 distinct wine regions can actually grow up to 60 different varietals (unheard of for a wine region), and are home to world-class wineries with a chill, community vibe. Even better, Paso Robles is only a 60-minute flight into San Luis Obispo from LAX, or a 3 1/2-hour car ride, or a six-hour train ride. Here are the must-try wineries on any trip out to Paso’s wine country, from large-scale producers with storied pedigrees to boutique operations with onsite lodging.

Drinking Up the Local Flavor (and Wine) in Paso Robles

Los Angeles Magazine
April 30, 2018
Paso Robles’ rise as a wine region is startling for anyone who can remember the days, not that long ago really, when a root beer at the late, great 21st Street Drive-In was a highlight of the culinary scene. More than 50 percent bigger in area than the Napa Valley AVA, Paso Robles rapidly went from emerging to emerged, and the industry’s growth only continues. If not literally exponential, the increase of bonded wineries in Paso Robles is nevertheless remarkable—from 29 in 1995 to 200 today.

While it’s expanded and grown tremendously in recent years – something that I heard concerns about from locals who appreciate the growth but don’t want it to become too trendy – at many of the wineries, you can hang out with the owners themselves & some don’t charge tasting fees."

Modern Color-Blocked Dinner Party with an Unexpected Palette

Ruffled Blog
March 19, 2018
From the photographer, Emily of Anna Delores Photography: The designers, sisters Stephanie and Natalie of Lovelyfest, wanted to create an intimate, moody dinner party with a variety of textures and colors. Especially because it was a celebration with other vendors, they wanted to go outside of the box and plan something a little different from current wedding trends. They wanted to push the envelope on style and color, and knew they’d have more fun with an unexpected, exciting palette. Their inspiration came from the venue itself: Halter Ranch. The focal color of the dinner tables was a rich teal blue, which complemented the rust-red silos and brought out their beautiful texture. Another inspiration was the current color-blocking trend; we don’t see it much in weddings yet, but Stephanie and Natalie love it in other aspects of design. They also brought the color-blocking concept to the dining chairs and napkin shades, as well. White chairs got mauve napkins and copper chairs got white napkins. The result was fresh and different. Trumpet Vine Catering created a menu of family-style tapas courses, and Lovelyfest created a booklet-style menu with custom colored silk tassels for everyone to peruse and reference during dinner service.

Halter Ranch Grenache Blanc

Santa Barbara Independent
September 27, 2017
The heat of late summer calls for a revitalizing wine like this one from the gorgeous SIP (Sustainable in Practice) Certified vineyards of Halter Ranch in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles. This Rhône blend is 80 percent Grenache Blanc, 14 percent Picpoul Blanc, 4 percent Roussanne, 2 percent Viognier, and 100 percent delicious, from its floral and wet stone nose to its lemon/melon fruit and acid core. Its just-right tartness coaxes your taste buds to stand attention.

Worth enjoying in the shade poolside on its own as an aperitif, it would also pair particularly well with shellfish still aquiver or help cut the richness in a buttery and even spicy shrimp dish.

Paso produces everything from whites and roses to reds of Rhone, Bordeaux, Italian, Spanish, and American varietals. To truly know Paso is to know it is wine region with depth and flair, a bit wild in its lack of adherence to one perspective, and always crafting outstanding wines to be enjoyed year round.
