Tasting 2012 Rosé and 2011 Synthesis

2012 Rosé

2012 Rosé preparing to enter the line up

Our 2012 Rosé is unique in the history of HRV pink.  It represents one of only 2 wines we’ve produced that come in at less than 14% alcohol (the other being 2009 Cabernet Franc).  The shift toward lower alcohol and higher acid in the rosé is intentional.  We have found it maintains its delicious bright red fruit character quite well while the bracing acidity provided by Picpoul Blanc makes it even more delectable with food.  We cannot wait to share it with you.  In the meantime here are our notes:

2012 Rosé is composed of 68% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 12% Picpoul Blanc, and 5% Syrah.   Immediately the nose is bright and bursting with red fruit in the cranberry, raspberry, and strawberry spectrum.  On the palate the texture is light but mouthfilling with that thirst quenching quality rosé has the potential to achieve so welll.  Acidity is present but not overwhelming.  As the wine opens notes of passionfruit, guava, grapefruit, and sour cherry begin to emerge.  A delightful cranberry grapefruit zip swoops in on the finish leaving the palate fresh and awaiting the next sip.

Despite incrementally increasing rosé quantities over the past few vintages, we’ve found that it still sells out rapidly so don’t hesitate in securing yours as we inch toward Spring.

2012 Rosé

English Muffin, Farm Fresh Egg, Smoked Salmon, Sour Creme, Lemon, and Chives. Add a dash of Rosé to enter the sublime.

In preparation for this momentous release we have been experimenting with different pairings in an attempt to find the food/2012 Rosé bliss point.  Thus far we have prepared the recipe pictured above, which was created by Jamie Oliver. Expect a full recipe and article in the upcoming newsletter which will be available with the club shipment and in the HRV Tasting Room.

In addition to the new rosé we recently had the opportunity to taste the 2011 Synthesis (78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Syrah) out of bottle for the first time:

2011 Synthesis - Halter Ranch Vineyard

2011 Synthesis

2011 Synthesis already seems like the cool, collected older sibling of the (nearly sold out!) 2010.  Slightly more fruit forward with an underlying dark meaty character, this wine absolutely screams to be drunk, paired or unpaired.  We expect it has 3-5 years of life in it if cellaring is your game…but who could possibly wait that long once the first sip is taken?  Expect dark plummy fruit, some slight oak influence, an impressively full mouthfeel, and some peppery spice.  This will pair with….everything.  Precise release date has not yet been set, but keep an eye here as we will notify you enthusiastically once it becomes available.
